From Scraps to Staples: How Miakoda Turns Waste Into Worth
At Miakoda, we believe that waste is a design flaw—and we’re doing everything we can to eliminate it.
We produce all of our clothing in small batches, averaging just 50–300 pieces per style. That’s a far cry from the thousands (or tens of thousands) produced by fast fashion brands. We also release only a handful of styles each year, not hundreds of new drops each week. This slow approach to fashion means we naturally generate far less waste—but we’re still not satisfied with any waste at all.
That’s why we save every production scrap, hand-sort them, and repurpose them into our beloved zero waste accessories. It’s a time-intensive process that involves careful sorting and thoughtful design, and it’s often carried out by our incredible independent sewer or directly by our factory partners. The result? Brand-new accessories made entirely from what would’ve otherwise gone to a landfill.
Over the years, we’ve created scrunchies, washcloths, headbands, scarves, bras, underwear, tote bags—even joggers—from our leftover fabric. Some superlatives from our zero waste collection:
-
Most popular? Zero Waste Scrunchies
-
Most requested? Zero Waste Headbands
-
Quickest to sell out? Zero Waste Hair Towels
-
Saved the most fabric? Zero Waste Joggers
-
Most time intensive to make? Zero Waste Blanket Scarves
These pieces aren’t just accessories—they’re our love letters to the planet, made with intention, care, and creativity.
Thank you for supporting our zero waste initiatives. They’re close to our hearts and serve as a daily reminder that sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a practice, and it’s worth the extra effort.
